Guilty of drug abuse and child neglect… “I regret my mistakes in life.”
Related to the incident that shocked American society earlier this year when a 6-year-old boy shot a teacher in class, the child’s mother was sentenced to prison on charges of child neglect. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), a local daily, reported on the 15th (local time) that he was sentenced to two years in prison.
According to the report, the judge of the Circuit Court in Newport News, Virginia, USA, sentenced Deja Taylor (26) on this day was sentenced in recognition of the prosecution’s indictment that Taylor had neglected her son and allowed him to shoot.
Taylor’s son shot and seriously injured his teacher while attending class at an elementary school in Newport News in January of this year.
It was found that this child talked back to the teacher’s admonition and got into an argument. The gun belonged to the mother, and she took it to school. It is unusual for prosecutors to indict the parents of a child who shot a child, but in recent years, similar cases aimed at holding guardians accountable have been increasing.
Previously, Taylor was sentenced to 21 months in prison by the Eastern District Court of Virginia last month for inhaling drugs such as marijuana while in possession of a firearm. Taylor did not inhale drugs and took parental responsibility. The prosecution and the court’s judgment are that if everything had been done, his son would not have gone to school with a gun.
Taylor said during the prosecution’s investigation that he regretted making mistakes in his life and that he had suffered from mental health issues and marijuana addiction.
The family said her son also had a serious disability. The victim teacher filed a $40 million lawsuit was filed for damages amounting to hundreds of millions.
