AI that can surpass humans could be released next year.

Elon Musk, CEO of the American electric car company Tesla, predicted on the 8th that AI (artificial intelligence) that surpasses humans “may come out within the next year.” Musk revealed this in an interview with Nikolai Tangen, CEO of Norway’s sovereign wealth fund, conducted on his social networking service (SNS) X (formerly Twitter).

Musk said, “If we define AGI (artificial general intelligence) as AI that is smarter than the smartest human, it will probably be possible within the next year, say within two years.” Musk’s prediction is far ahead of the prediction of Jensen Huang, CEO of AI chip leader Nvidia, who said, “AGI at the same level as humans will emerge within five years.” He also said, “The limitations of AI development are voltage transformer supply and securing power,” and pointed out that the current power grid is unable to meet the increased demand resulting from the development of AI technology. Musk went on to say that his AI startup, xAI, “hopes to complete training for the next version of Grok in May.”

Grok is an AI chatbot like ChatGPT, developed by xAI, an AI startup founded by Musk in July of last year, based on the large-scale language model (LLM) Grok-1 and introduced in December of the same year. He also predicted that, as competition surrounding the development of AI technology intensifies, “China will not lag behind the United States.” Musk also announced plans for SpaceX, a private space company he leads, to explore the Moon and Mars. Musk envisions completing human migration by building a self-sufficient city on Mars by 2050.

First, he said, “We will take people to the moon within five years.” He also expressed confidence that “the unmanned spacecraft Starship will reach Mars within five years, and humanity will be able to land on Mars for the first time within seven years.” This is about 4 to 5 years later than Musk originally announced that humans would be able to land on Mars in 2026. Starship, a spacecraft developed by Space Regarding difficulties in vehicle sales due to conflicts with unions in Sweden at the end of last year, Musk said, “The storm has passed,” and said the worst was over and things were now “in pretty good shape.” Musk previously announced on the 5th that he would unveil Tesla’s self-driving robotaxi (unmanned taxi) in August. He did not reveal specific details about the robotaxi, but only wrote on his for the past several years, Musk has emphasized the robotaxi project, in which Tesla vehicles drive unmanned using their own autonomous driving technology and pick up passengers for a fee like taxis.

Tesla’s stock price, which rose about 5% in after-hours trading on the New York Stock Exchange after this news was announced, closed at $172.98 in regular trading today, up 4.9% from the previous trading day.
